Today's Update for October 9, 2026

So who will build it all? RBC's new energy outlook models more than $200 billion in Canadian construction spending through 2040. Its scenario puts peak workforce demand at 109,000 to 132,000 people in 2029–30. Those figures depend on projects proceeding. RBC also warns that replacing retiring workers will absorb much of the hiring effort. For anyone planning a project, does the labour plan match the schedule? A headcount allowance means little without the right certifications, location and supervision. Training takes time. Competing projects cannot all assume the same experienced crew will be available when they need it. RBC's report A construction schedule is only as credible as the workforce behind it.
