October 10, 2026 | Consumer Spending, Russian Diesel and EU–China Trade

AI hosts Emmet and Grace examine the gap between economic signals and transactions people can complete. Fresh consumer research opens a discussion about purchase intentions, household budgets and the evidence businesses need before changing inventory or investment plans. Dated borrowing benchmarks and Friday's market readings provide context. The international discussion considers the commercial and geopolitical tests for additional diesel supply, then explores how European and Chinese trade commitments could affect manufacturers, customers and industrial inputs. The hosts distinguish announcements from implementation, survey expectations from realized outcomes, and hypothetical examples from reported events. They close with next week's scheduled U.S. inflation releases. Today's Update for October 10, 2026

Why hasn't your customer bought yet? The University of Michigan's preliminary October consumer sentiment index fell to 46.3 from 48.1 in September. Current conditions weakened while expectations improved. That combination leaves businesses with a practical question about when interest becomes an order. Which purchases are your customers delaying? A separate Michigan report published October 9 found that 31% expected to spend as usual on items with large price increases. Its interviews ran from June 23 through September 21. These are intentions, not October sales, and spending less on particular items need not mean spending less overall. Our reading is that businesses should examine what customers change. A cheaper model, a repair and a postponed purchase have different consequences for revenue and margins. A headline about confidence cannot distinguish them. What are you seeing more often in your business? Financing adds another constraint. Freddie Mac's October 8 weekly thirty-year mortgage average was 7.40%, up from 7.28% a week earlier. It is a benchmark, not an individual offer. The Fed's latest published bank prime benchmark was 7.00% for October 8, unchanged from the previous day. These measures cover different borrowers and products. For a hypothetical seller, the next step is to identify the obstacle. If a customer cannot manage the payment, a better advertisement may accomplish little. If reliability is the concern, cheaper financing may miss the point. What evidence would tell you which obstacle matters? The coming data can help with context. September CPI and real earnings are scheduled for October 14, followed by producer prices on October 15 and import and export prices on October 16. All are due at 8.30 a.m. Eastern. None will replace a business's own orders, cancellations, discounts and margins. That is the distinction to carry into next week. Public data can improve the questions we ask. Actual transactions show how customers answer. Before changing prices or inventory, a business needs evidence that connects the national picture to what its customers can afford and value. Share what you are seeing, and how you interpret it, in the comments. A hopeful customer still needs an affordable purchase.
